Design Journey: London Art and Charm

Design Journey: London Art and Charm

As a custom window treatment designer based in South Jersey and a lifelong lover of travel, I’ve always believed the best design ideas don’t come from behind a desk—they come from out in the world.

If you’ve been following along, you might remember last year’s Design Journey, where I shared our travels in Spain. That trip was filled with sun-soaked palettes, Moorish details, and textures that found their way into my design work.

This summer, London’s layers of history, texture, and creativity reminded me why inspiration is often hiding in plain sight——and why every trip offers a fresh source of window treatment inspiration.

Soaking It In

I first lived in London as a young woman studying textiles and working in fashion. Returning this summer felt like a full-circle moment. This trip was a chance to reconnect with the city and with my dear friend and former flatmate, Ali. Every corner was bursting with creativity—and I soaked it all in.

A Canal-Side Palette

From leafy green walkways to the bold pop of a yellow-and-green houseboat, design cues were everywhere along the canals. Nature, architecture, and even a humble boat can spark window treatment inspiration for layering textures and unexpected color combinations.

Patterns, Textures, Energy

Markets like Camden are filled with bold prints and playful patterns. It reminded me that sometimes design doesn’t have to whisper, it can sing. A well-placed trim or a daring fabric choice can bring that same energy into a home.

Mamma Mia! Magic

Seeing Mamma Mia! live at the Novello Theatre was a feast for the eyes. The costumes (always my favorite), lighting, and set design gave me a fresh perspective on how movement and color work together.

Bringing It Back Home

Travel always refills my creative well. London reminded me why details matter and why custom is always worth it. Just as these everyday scenes were transformed into art, the right custom draperies and window treatments can turn a room into something extraordinary—whether it’s a London flat, Princeton estate, or Jersey Shore home.

Just like travel reveals colors, textures, and ideas you may never have considered, design is all about discovery too.
